Chapter 10 – A bluebird falls from the sky

February 2013

Gary’s house

Cindy parked the Armada behind Mike’s Jeep at Gary’s house, she looked over at John and said, “Well, you have fun cutting up that pig today.”

John shook his head and smiled. Skylar who was sitting behind her mom said, “Oh mom! That’s just gross.”

“Tell me about it, Sky. That is why we are spending the day inside, learning how to can,” Cindy replied.

“What about me?” asked Skylar’s boyfriend Brad, who had joined the family today. A few days ago, John had had a conversation with Brad’s father, Brad Jordan Sr., about preparedness and the class they were attending today. Brad Jr. had the same mind-set as both Skylar and his father, not fully understanding the potential hazards facing the U.S., but understanding at a core that everyone should be prepared to some extent. He just wished his mom would agree with his dad on this topic. They had divorced a few years prior, and it was rough on him in regards to spending weekends with his dad prepping, riding dirt bikes, and learning new outdoor things, while at mom’s house, it was homework and video games. Of course talking and texting Skylar was quickly becoming an everyday occurrence.

“You, sir,” John said turning to face the timid, young man, “are with me in the backyard learning how to become a butcher, while Sky and Cindy are learning to can.” Turning back to his wife he said, “Do you need any help carrying in your supplies and jars?”

“I don’t think so, hon. Sky and I can manage; we are only doing applesauce today, so I was told to bring a half-bushel of apples, some cinnamon, and the canning equipment. Gary’s wife said she had extra jars and lids so we left ours at home,” Cindy said, as she unbuckled her seat belt. “I sure hope Mary made it today. I haven’t seen her in a long time.”

Getting out of the SUV, John directed Brad around the house and wished his women luck in their cooking adventure. Skylar was turning into a very good cook under John’s apprenticeship; however, his wife could scorch water if she wasn’t paying attention. Part of John often wondered how she survived her previous marriage, knowing Skylar’s dad also couldn’t cook very well, either.

Cindy and Sky knocked on the front door, and Candice opened it saying, “Hey there ladies. You know you are family, so just walk on in next time.” Candice was a short, plump woman of mid-sixty with grey hair and as sweet as any grandmother. She had on an apron that read: “you may have hunted it, and killed it, but I am cooking it - so get out of my kitchen.” From farther back in the house there was a loud shriek, “Oh My Lord, is that Cindy Lou Shields?” Each word and syllable seemed to climb an octave higher as a woman the same age as Cindy appeared in the hallway. “Oh God, it is you!” said a very happy Mary McIntire.
